Dr. Christoph Both has a broad background spanning a Master’s in Education (Music/Physics), a Master’s in Performance, Violoncello (Music State Academy Frankfurt/M) and a PhD in Musicology (UVIC), exploring the relationship of information theory on the birth of electronic and computer music composition in the works of Stockhausen and Hiller.

As founder of the Acadia University’s Music Technology program, he been involved in a variety of innovative technological/educational initiatives. CANARIE and SSHRC grants supported the co-development of a US patent (http://musicpath.acadiau.ca), an online real-time MIDI music instrument music teaching and performance tool, created in partnership with Acadia University, the Royal Conservatory of Toronto, and Yamaha Music Canada.

Dr. Both’s ethnomusicological research just completed the audiovisual digitalization of an archival collection of East African music and media sources (www.missionmusicafrica.com), recently transferred to the Berlin Phonogramm Archive.

He has enjoyed a widely varied career and special interest in commissioning and performing new works as a cello improviser (ATMA, Haenssler Classic, Warner Music UK) with his ensemble (www.sanctuarytrio.com), which attracted numerous Canada Council and MIANS international travel/recording grants (Canada/US, Europe, Russia and China).

Currently a Professor of Music at the School of Music, Acadia University, Canada, he taught a wide variety of courses, including 20th century music history, violoncello, chamber music, string methods/pedagogy, music appreciation, music technology and directs the Acadia University Orchestra.
